Janos Koolen mandoline, gitaar, zang

Janos studeerde muziekwetenschap in Utrecht en verdiepte zich al vroeg in Ierse en Amerikaanse folk. Als singer/songwriter bracht hij in 2003 zijn eigen composities uit op de cd In my garden. Er ging een wereld voor hem open toen hij voor het eerst een opname van mandolinespeler David Grisman hoorde. De laatste jaren heeft Janos zich helemaal toegelegd op de mandoline als allround instrument met groovy begeleidingen en jazzy improvisaties. Jeroen Jongsma en Izak Boom waren hierbij een grote inspiratie. Invloeden uit de verschillende soorten muziek die Janos speelt neemt hij mee in zijn composities voor Stargazer.

Janos studied Musicology in Utrecht and got involved in Irish and American folk music from an early stage. As a singer/songwriter he released his own compositions on the album In my garden in 2003. A deep passion for the mandolin rose after hearing a recording of David Grisman. In the last couple of years Janos developed an allround style on the mandolin playing grooves en jazzy improvisations. Jeroen Jongsma and Izak Boom were an important inspiration. In his compositions for Stargazer Janos brings influences from all the different genres he plays.

Anneke Eijkelboom fiddle, bariton fiddle

Anneke kreeg vanaf haar achtste jaar vioolles van fiddler Jack Schroevers, die haar tot haar grote genoegen liet kennis maken met Amerikaanse old time en Ierse traditionele muziek. Toen ze iets ouder werd, werd ze met name geïnspireerd door de ‘ruige’ fiddle muziek uit het Ierse graafschap Donegal. Vele zomers bracht ze in Donegal door en volgde er workshops van vooraanstaande fiddlers als Paddy Glackin, Oisín McAuley, James Byrne en Siobhán Peoples. Ze ontwikkelde haar eigen stijl verder tijdens een studiejaar in de Ierse stad Cork. In Nederland speelde Anneke in diverse groepen als Atlantic Fringe, the East West Stringband en de experimentele cross over band Kill da Goose. Sinds kort experimenteert zij ook met haar bijzondere bariton fiddle.

From the age of eight Anneke got lessons of fiddler Jack Schroevers, who introduced her to American old time and traditional Irish Music, which she loved. When she grew older, she got inspired by the ‘rough’ fiddle style from county Donegal. She spent many summers in Donegal and did workshops with renowned fiddlers like Paddy Glackin, Oisín McAuley, James Byrne and Siobhán Peoples. She developed her own style of playing during a year she spent in Cork City. Back in the Netherlands, Anneke played in several groups such as Atlantic Fringe, the East West Stringband and the experimental cross over band Kill da Goose. Recently she started experimenting with a unique baritone fiddle.

Stijn van Beek uilleann pipes, low whistle

Na jaren van eenzame opsluiting met zijn Ierse pipes in Arnhem, studeerde Stijn enkele jaren aan de UCC in het Ierse Cork om zijn technische vaardigheden op het instrument verder uit te diepen. Terug in Nederland werkte hij met een kleurrijke groep musici met uiteenlopende achtergronden, van traditioneel Ierse tot Balkan muziek, van experimenteel tot jazz en klassiek. Zijn speelstijl blijft hoe dan ook sterk geworteld in de Ierse muziek, de traditie van travelling pipers als Johnny Doran en Paddy Keenan.

Stijn is an uilleann pipes and low whistle player originating from Arnhem in the east of Holland. After playing and studying music in Cork city in Ireland for a couple of years he moved back to the Netherlands and settled in Amsterdam. Here he cooperated with a colourful multitude of musicians from different musical backgrounds: from Irish trad to balkan music, from experimentalism to jazz and classical. The music he plays is always rooted though in the tradition of travelling Irish pipers like Johnny Doran and Paddy Keenan.

Kaspar Laval bouzouki, low whistle, zang

Als kind geselden Kaspar Laval en de gitaar elkaar al vroeg. Thuis raakte hij wegwijs in de muziek van Harry Sacksioni. Ondertussen betrad hij diverse podia in symfonische rock-formaties á la Rush. Toen hij als dertienjarig jongetje de losgeslagen Pogues op het Pinkpopfestival zag, raakte hij steeds meer bevlogen door de energieke traditionele Ierse en later Asturische muziek. Zijn composities voor Stargazer zijn veelal hierdoor geïnspireerd. Naast melodie is Kaspar vooral geïnteresseerd in ritme. Met name de bouzouki intrigeert hem, als lieflijk rinkelend tokkelinstrument en als dreigende bandmotor. Zijn ritmische spel is sterk beïnvloed door de The Edge, Johnny Marr en de Macedonische tambura.

As a child Kaspar Laval started torturing his guitar and vice versa. At home he got familiar with Harry Sacksioni's music. Meanwhile he played in different venues with symphonic rock groups in the style known from bands like Rush. When as a thirteen year old boy he witnessed the Pogues going crazy at Pinkpop, he started being fascinated by energetic Irish traditional music. Later he expanded his interests to music from Asturias which is a true inspiration for his Stargazer compositions. Besides melody, Kaspar's main focus is rythm. Especially the bouzouki grabbed his attention. This extraordinary instrument enables him both to play subtle picking parts and to be the driving force behind a band. His rythmic playing style is influenced by The Edge, Johnny Marr and the Macedonian tambura.
